Nittany AI Student Society, LLM Workshop and Use Case Brainstorming

This is a great opportunity to learn more about the Nittany AI Student Society, explore the use of large language models (LLMs) in addressing challenges or issues you face as a student every day, and do some brainstorming around some use cases for LLMs at Penn State. Plan to attend this informal session if you want to learn more about our community, get educated on LLMs, find a great idea for the Nittany AI Challenge, or add members to your team.

Leading the session will be Bill Tarves from Penn State’s cloud computing team. Bill will provide an overview of LLMs and talk a bit about Penn State resources, and then we will all brainstorm some potential use cases. 

Just imagine how you might improve the student experience using an LLM like GPT-4. Below are a some areas where they could be particularly impactful. We will explore these as well as other ideas that you and your team might want to pursue for the upcoming Nittany AI Challenge. 

Personalized Tutoring: LLMs could provide individualized learning experiences for students. By analyzing a student’s learning style, performance, and challenges, these AI systems can offer tailored tutoring, suggest resources, and create customized study plans. This personalized approach can help address specific learning needs, making education more effective and accessible.

Advising or Administrative Assistants: LLMs could be used to automate routine administrative tasks such as answering frequently asked questions, processing forms, or providing information about courses and campus events. This not only improves efficiency but also allows administrative staff to focus on more complex tasks that require human intervention.

Enhanced Research Capabilities: For research-focused students and faculty, LLMs can serve as powerful tools in literature review and data analysis. They can process vast amounts of information, summarize research papers, and even suggest potential areas of study or new research angles, thus accelerating the research process.

Career Counseling and Guidance: By analyzing current job market trends, skills requirements, and individual student profiles, LLMs can provide personalized career counseling. They can suggest suitable career paths, necessary skills, and even specific job opportunities or internships, helping students to effectively plan their careers.

Implementing these AI–driven solutions could significantly improve the quality of student services, making education more personalized, efficient, and accessible.
